In this chapter, an overview of the literature around middle leadership as well as middle leadership in the Irish and international context is examined.

In this article, Dr. Siobhán Kavanagh, looks at the Professional Development needs of appointed Middle Leaders in Education and Training Board Post-Primary Schools.

Our latest 'Fireside Chat is with Dr. Johanna Fitzgerald Head of the Department of Educational Psychology, Inclusive and Special Education in Mary Immaculate College.  Johanna's current research focuses on enhancing teaching and learning for all students, particularly those with additional and special educational needs, across four main domains- interprofessional education and collaboration, educational leadership, pedagogy, and teacher professional learning. Johanna speaks to us about her research on SENCO's & their leadership role in schools.

Across our school system, middle and senior leaders are being constantly challenged to lead core curricular disciplines, like Mathematics, in new and innovative ways. Policy makers remain hungry for sustained uplift in attainment but how are mathematics leaders responding to this imperative? Dr. Damien Burke discusses his findings in this Fireside Chat.

This paper reports on a study which focussed on the contribution to leadership made by SETs whose role includes the overall coordination of SEN provision, and also those who support school principals by informally contributing to the coordination of this essential aspect of school life. The study was carried out at a time of significant transition in special education in Ireland, during 2017, when the revised model of resource allocation was about to be implemented.
